Writing what I want

“I just write what I wanted to rite. I write what amuses me. It is totally for myself.” JK Rowling
I love this. It is absolutely the core of how I write. I write stories I would want to read, filled with characters I would want to know. I think this, honestly, should be the motivation of most authors…after all if I don’t enjoy my plot and/or my characters when they are bouncing around in my head, why should my readers care about them. There are far too many other books they could be reading, filled with characters they do like…
So far, people have, for the most part, enjoyed the characters I have introduced them to, and though I still worry that one day Arianna will get into a fight at a party, I am thrilled that other people know these fictional people who up until 2 years ago, existed only for me. I can’t wait to introduce more characters to the party as well.
Writing stories I want to read, means I still enjoy them no matter how many times I have read them. Every time I have read Whatever you Make of It I relate to and can feel every emotion Jyn ever feels…though her ending turns out happier than mine has yet…which is, of course, the fun of fiction. And there is a moment in Arianna’s Honor that makes me cry every time I think about it.
I hope I don’t sound like a tease here, but there are events in upcoming novels that I make me laugh and make me cheer on my characters, there are scenes that make me sad and scenes that make me growly for my characters. There are scenes I can’t wait to talk to you about. So I better get back to working on them.

  1. I like it too. I see so much advice on this and that which is formulaic in nature and sends any budding writers the wrong message. Writing should be an intrinsically motivated thing and it is a craft that no teacher can teach but experience and time itself.

    • I think certain elements of writing can be taught…but the passion of it, the fire inside…that has to come from the person
